[22:06:02] <CasW> Hey commandoline! Did I see activity on the OpenTeacher Launchpad last week?
[22:07:47] <commandoline> Hi CasW! It's been some time, how are you?
[22:08:04] <commandoline> Yes, I saw that debian planned on removing OT from the repos as Qt 4 is getting old
[22:09:07] <commandoline> I have a couple of slow weeks, so I ported it over to Qt 5. And set up a CI build system.
[22:09:31] <CasW> Hahaha, too bad! Planning on picking up development again as a whole?
[22:09:54] <CasW> I'm fine! I'm currently finishing some applications for funding for a PhD. How are you?
[22:10:30] <commandoline> not sure. Perhaps. I already fixed quite a few bugs, so as soon as the CI can build windows + opensuse packages I'll probably do a release, and from then on, we'll see...
[22:11:31] <commandoline> Well, I'm currently in the second year of a BSc Artificial Intelligence in Groningen.
[22:13:24] <commandoline> I like it, especially the variety of subjects it covers. And also no complaints on other terrains. :)
[22:14:54] <commandoline> what kind of PhD are you looking at?
[22:15:18] <CasW> Oh, nice! I still have a couple of friends in Groningen, actually... I think I know a guy who knows a guy who's also doing the artificial intelligence course in Groningen, seems like a terrific study!
[22:16:39] <CasW> Well, I'm most likely accepted at the university of Oxford! I'm currently doing my master's here, and I am doing my dissertation / thesis with my potential PhD supervisor, he said he recommended me at the university! Now they only need to have a spot for me and then it's fine!
[22:16:46] <CasW> It's terribly expensive, though ;)
[22:20:00] <commandoline> That sounds great! And I can imagine...
[22:21:16] <commandoline> having Oxford on your CV will probably help paying for it in the long-term, though :)
[22:22:41] <commandoline> Well, tomorrow I'm back to a schedule with not much time for OpenTeacher, but today quite some stuff got done:
[22:23:11] <commandoline> http://web.openteacher.org/ and http://web.openteacher.org/mobile/ ; trivially updatable from the latest CI build docker image
[22:23:41] <commandoline> Also: web.openteacher.org/services/ , http://web.openteacher.org/code-documentation/ & finally http://web.openteacher.org/builds/
[22:24:36] <CasW> Hahaha, I surely hope so! Nice progress! If I had a little bit more time I would definitely help again, but you know how it goes ;)
[22:25:42] <commandoline> yeah, no problem. The CI stuff got a bit out of hand anyway, but I'm using it as a chance to play around with bash/Docker/Travis-CI. :P
[22:26:47] <CasW> Hahaha, I'm a bit afraid to look at the code again, it was a bit of a mess, wasn't it? :P Complete rewrite and dub it OpenTeacher 4.0? ;)
[22:30:23] <commandoline> I think you underestimate the amount of code OT consists of. It's unrewritable with the amount of time I have these days. :P
[22:31:56] <commandoline> Anyway, when you get away from the UI code it's not that bad. I mean, the whole module system is too convulted, but it did at least make sure most pieces of code have a single concern
[22:34:31] <CasW> Hmm, I'm sure we would've done it differently if we did it now. It's still quite a proud part of my CV, though ;)
[22:34:59] <commandoline> oh, sure. And for me too. :P
[22:36:44] <commandoline> If I'm ever going to branch out toward new features, it would probably be on some of the side projects... Maybe making OT web really work; with live synchronization between devices and federation between servers. That would be interesting.
[22:37:35] <commandoline> Or perhaps a word train mode that tries to model the user, and that way gets you the optimal way of learning them.
[22:37:57] <commandoline> (Yes, I had an interesting subject called Cognitive Architectures this year :P)
[22:38:58] <commandoline> anyway, so many ideas, so little time...
[22:41:56] <CasW> Hahaha, well, I think the first thing you should do, is make it available for smartphones. Nobody learns on the computer anymore ;)
[22:42:55] <CasW> And do something about the content, I learn languages using DuoLingo and Memrise nowadays, they both offer complete courses on many languages, there's not really any way to do it without that
[22:42:59] <commandoline> that falls under the web idea, although it would probably need native apps, which is... Well, it takes time.
[22:43:10] <CasW> Or you could use a wrapper, of course
[22:43:34] <CasW> Yeah, wait, that was what you were saying :P Sorry, wasn't entirely here
[22:43:39] <commandoline> I'm doing Duolingo myself too. :P
[22:44:22] <commandoline> but that kind of thing is not doable without a huge team, the most you can indeed achieve is being a client, or just focus on flashcard software.
[22:44:50] <commandoline> (where of where did my grammar go. Ah well, you get the idea.)
[22:45:27] <CasW> Unless you steal from them. I don't know, Memrise has a lot of user-made courses, maybe they would allow us to hook in on that somehow
[22:47:39] <commandoline> yeah, that would be a possible way forward too. But again, those things are large projects on their own.
[22:49:10] <CasW> Yeah. That's really something for a version 4.0. Let's first make sure it's up-to-date again :P
[22:51:26] <commandoline> True :)
[22:59:53] <commandoline> Alright, time for me to go, I have to get up early tomorrow morning. It was nice hearing from you again. Keep us (lordnoid_ also still reads the channel) updated on how it goes with your PhD.
[22:59:55] <commandoline> bye!
[23:18:21] <CasW> Alright, bye! Good luck tomorrow!
